The halls of Strixhaven University are about to open their doors once again, and this time, there are secrets lurking in every corner. Secrets of Strixhaven brings us back to Magic's wizarding school with a darker twist — post-Phyrexian invasion, the academy has changed, and so have its students.

If you're planning to attend prerelease events starting April 17th, 2026, here's everything you need to know to make the most of your return to Arcavios.

What Makes This Prerelease Different?

This isn't your typical return visit. The Secrets of Strixhaven prerelease promises a more mysterious take on the beloved set, with new mechanics that reflect how the school has evolved since we last saw it.

Like all prereleases, you'll be playing Sealed format — meaning everyone gets the same number of packs and builds from scratch. No netdecks, no wallet warriors, just pure deckbuilding skill and a bit of luck with your pack openings.

Each event typically runs 3-4 rounds over about 4-5 hours, giving you plenty of time to get familiar with the new cards. Most stores are already taking bookings, and recent prereleases have been selling out, so don't hang about if you want a spot.

Your Prerelease Kit Breakdown

Each Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease Kit contains:

    • 5 Secrets of Strixhaven Play boosters
    • 1 college-themed booster (more on this in a moment)
    • 1 foil promo card
    • A cardboard deck box
    • A spindown die

The college-themed booster is where things get interesting. You'll get cards specifically from one of Strixhaven's five colleges: Quandrix (Blue/Green), Prismari (Blue/Red), Lorehold (Red/White), Silverquill (White/Black), or Witherbloom (Black/Green).

This gives you a slight push towards those colours, but don't feel locked in — sometimes your best deck will be completely different from what your college booster suggests.

New Mechanics You Need to Know

The standout new mechanic is Prepared, and it's a proper game-changer. Some creatures enter the battlefield prepared, while others become prepared when you meet certain conditions. When a creature is prepared, you can cast the spell printed on the right side of its text box — think of it as having a spell tucked away for later use.

Each college also brings back its own flavour:

Silverquill's Repartee triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery targeting a creature — perfect for those who love combat tricks with extra value.

Prismari's Opus cares about big spells. Cast something cheap and get a small bonus. Go all out with a five-mana haymaker and get something spectacular in return.

Witherbloom's Infusion rewards you for gaining life during the turn, adding extra effects to your spells when you've topped up your life total.

There's also Paradigm, which is essentially an improved version of the old Epic mechanic. Cast a Paradigm spell once, and you get to cast a free copy every turn during your first main phase. Properly busted in the right deck.

What to Expect from the Mystical Archive

Here's the bit that'll get collectors excited — every single booster contains at least one Mystical Archive card. These iconic instants and sorceries return with gorgeous new artwork, and they're legal in whatever formats the original cards are legal in.

The real chase card is the serialised Emeritus of Ideation — a textless, double rainbow foil card that only appears in Collector Boosters. With art by Mark Poole (the original Ancestral Recall artist), this is going to be the card everyone's hunting for.

Prerelease Strategy Tips

Right, let's talk tactics. First thing — read up on the mechanics before you arrive. You'll have limited time for deckbuilding, and fumbling through card text while the clock ticks down is no fun.

Don't get too attached to your college colours. Yes, that themed booster is nice, but if your other packs are pushing you towards different colours, follow the power. Sealed is about building the best deck possible, not forcing an archetype.

The Prepared mechanic is going to create some wild board states. Keep track of which creatures are prepared and what spells they're packing — both yours and your opponent's. Missing a prepared spell could cost you the game.

If your store offers Two-Headed Giant events, seriously consider them. Playing alongside a mate and combining your card pools often leads to more powerful, synergistic decks than you'd manage solo.

Looking Ahead

The prerelease is just the beginning. Secrets of Strixhaven officially releases on April 24th, and there are five new Commander decks launching alongside it — one for each college, naturally.

This time around, the students have become the leaders, with each deck representing how the colleges have evolved. Expect some serious power level upgrades compared to the original Strixhaven Commander offerings.

Whether you're a returning student or visiting Strixhaven for the first time, this prerelease looks set to be something special. The combination of familiar mechanics with new twists, plus the intrigue of those "secrets," should make for some brilliant Limited gameplay.

If you're looking to dive deeper into Magic after the prerelease, our Magic: The Gathering collection has everything you need to keep the spells flying.

So, which college will you choose? And more importantly — are you ready to uncover the secrets waiting in the halls of Strixhaven?
