The set that started the era. Sword & Shield base (SWSH1) released on 7 February 2020, introduced V and VMAX, and quietly set the template every English set followed for the next three years.
It's an odd one to collect now. Nothing in it is expensive by modern standards, the artwork is restrained compared with what came later, and yet Zacian V and Zamazenta V remain genuinely iconic cards. The full arts and Rainbow Rares are affordable, the base numbering costs very little, and the whole thing can be completed for less than a single mid-tier Special Illustration Rare from a modern set.
That makes SWSH1 one of the best entry points for anyone who wants the satisfaction of finishing a set without a four-figure budget. It's also a proper time capsule: the last era before the hobby went genuinely mainstream in 2020.
