MTG God Packs explained: the 2027 booster changes

Magic: The Gathering God Pack celebration card with a foil and a non-foil rare card and the Nauctis: The Sunken Realm logo

From Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on 5 February 2027, Magic's Play Boosters are renamed Booster Packs, 1 in every 1,000 is a God Pack full of rares and mythics, and 1 in every 300 Collector Boosters gets its own God Pack. Foil commons and uncommons leave Booster Packs, Collector Boosters lose three cards, and Wizards of the Coast says prices aren't changing.

Wizards announced the changes on 5 October 2026 in Updating Our Boosters in 2027, with a guide for stores on the Wizards Play Network the same day. Here's what actually changes, in plain terms.

01 · The headline

What is a God Pack?

A God Pack looks exactly like a normal booster on the outside. Inside, every card apart from the celebration card (and a foil land in the Collector version) is a rare or mythic rare. It isn't a separate product: God Packs are seeded at random among the normal packs, so the only way to find one is to open them.

Non-foil rare and/or mythic rare cards 10
Non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards 2
Traditional foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards 2

That's 14 rares or mythics in one pack. Booster Fun is Wizards' name for its alternate card treatments, such as borderless and showcase frames. The celebration card itself reads "Get out the toploaders, you opened a God Pack."

The dream pullWizards describes the five foil Booster Fun cards as five copies of the Collector Booster's "foil fancy slot". In theory, that means one pack could hold more than one headliner card. Wizards itself calls that "pretty improbable".

02 · Booster Packs

What changes in Booster Packs?

Play Boosters, the packs used for prereleases, drafts and most of what people open, are simply renamed Booster Packs. Wizards is clear it's a name change, not a new product. The contents shift too:

Play Booster (now) Booster Pack (from Nauctis)
Name Play Booster Booster Pack
Foil in every pack Guaranteed No longer guaranteed
Foil commons and uncommons Can appear Removed: any foil is a rare or mythic
Foil rare and mythic rate Current rate Increased
Japan Showcase cards Collector Boosters only Can appear in traditional foil in the wildcard slot
God Packs No 1 in 1,000

Wizards says player feedback was that foil commons and uncommons had "lost the luster" they once had. Taking them out, along with trimming Collector Boosters, frees up printing capacity for God Packs and Japan Showcase cards in Booster Packs. Wizards hasn't published the new foil rare rate yet.

03 · Collector Boosters

What changes in Collector Boosters?

3fewer cards per Collector Booster
2 + 1foil commons and foil uncommon removed
1 in 300Collector Boosters is a God Pack

Collector Boosters lose two foil commons and one foil uncommon, and those slots aren't replaced, so each pack has three fewer cards. Some foil commons and uncommons stay, because Collector Boosters become the only place to find them. Wizards is unusually frank that removing cards doesn't make opening more exciting; it says most people skip past them anyway.

04 · Release schedule

Which sets get God Packs?

Every Magic Multiverse set (Wizards' own worlds) from Nauctis onwards. Universes Beyond sets, the crossovers like Star Trek and The Hobbit, are expected to get God Packs some time in 2028.

05 · In-store events

What happens if you open a God Pack at a prerelease?

This is the part that matters at a prerelease or draft. Wizards' guidance to stores is to stop and call a judge or the organiser straight away. For competitive events it strongly recommends:

1Celebrate itMake a moment of it with the room.
2Take the God Pack out of the eventThe player keeps it for their collection.
3Replace it for freeThe player gets an unopened Booster Pack from the same set and carries on.
At competitive eventsAt events where Wizards supplies the product, such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, God Packs must be removed and replaced. At casual events the store can choose to let you keep it in your pool, but Wizards recommends removing and replacing it in most cases.

06 · Our take

Is this good news?

Our take

For collectors, mostly yes. God Packs give every Booster Pack a lottery-ticket moment, Japan Showcase foils in Booster Packs are a genuine upgrade, and we doubt many people will miss foil commons. Doing it without a price rise is the right call.

The cost lands on Collector Boosters: three fewer cards per pack for the same money is a real cut, even if most were foil commons people skimmed past. And at 1 in 1,000, God Packs will be rare. Expect a handful of opening videos, not one in every box.

Good news if
  • ✓You crack Booster Packs: more foil rares, Japan Showcase foils and a shot at a God Pack
  • ✓You play drafts and prereleases: Wizards' recommended approach lets you keep a God Pack and still play
Less good if
  • ✕You love foil commons for cubes or pauper decks: they'll only come from Collector Boosters
  • ✕You buy Collector Boosters by card count: each pack is three cards lighter
