If you're starting the Pokémon TCG from nothing, buy a Battle Deck. The two 30th Celebration Battle Decks (Espeon ex and Umbreon ex, out 30 October) are complete 60-card decks you can play straight out of the box. The Deck Crafter's Collection (23 October) is the second step: 40 tournament staples to turn your own cards into a proper deck. A League Battle Deck is the jump to tournament-style play, with Mega Greninja ex due on 13 November.

Deck Crafter's Collection vs Battle Decks vs League Battle Deck
They sound similar but do very different jobs. Only two of them are a deck you can shuffle up and play.

02 · Battle Decks
30th Celebration Battle Decks: Espeon ex and Umbreon ex
Each one is an all-foil, 60-card deck led by a Pokémon ex, with everything you need to play right away. The Espeon ex deck comes with an illustration rare-style Victini promo; the Umbreon ex deck has a matching Zeraora. Each one should also come with a deck box, coin and playmat.
This is the cleanest first purchase. Two friends can buy one each and play each other the same evening. Both boxes are marked Play Level 2.
03 · Deck Crafter's
Deck Crafter's Collection: what's in it
It's 40 tournament-staple cards for building a deck from scratch or powering up the ones you already have. Inside: a foil Meowth ex, 39 tournament-ready Supporter, Item and Pokémon Tool cards, a Deck Crafter's Guide, nine labelled dividers and a booster pack. The pack is expected to be Pitch Black, and there should be a Pokémon TCG Live code card too.
The expected list is the kind of thing players normally hunt down as singles:

Meowth ex is the clever inclusion. When you play it from your hand onto your Bench, its Last-Ditch Catch Ability searches your deck for a Supporter card. That's why it turns up in so many decks, and why it's also in the Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck.

League Battle Decks: Mega Greninja ex and Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex
A League Battle Deck is Pokémon's ready-made competitive deck: 60 cards with proper counts of the key Trainers, plus the kit you'd use at a Pokémon League. The box says Play Level 3, "For Experienced Trainers".
Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck
Each box holds a ready-to-play 60-card deck, 6 damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die, 2 coin condition markers, a deck box, a strategy sheet and a code card to play the deck online. The front of the box lists 6 foil cards. This is the deck list printed on the back:

Mega Greninja ex has 350 HP. Its Mortal Shuriken Ability lets you discard a Basic Water Energy from your hand, while it's in the Active Spot, to put 6 damage counters on one of your opponent's Pokémon; Ninja Spinner does 120, or 200 if you return a Water Energy attached to it to your hand. Mega Starmie ex backs it up with Jetting Blow (120 plus 50 to a Benched Pokémon) and Nebula Beam (210).
Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex League Battle Deck
Last year's League Battle Deck is still available from us at the time of writing. It runs three Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex and two Team Rocket's Crobat ex. Mewtwo hits hard, but its Power Saver Ability means it can't attack unless you have 4 or more Team Rocket's Pokémon in play, so it teaches you to build a board, not just attack.

05 · Prerelease
Where a Build & Battle Box fits
If you'd rather learn at a shop event, a prerelease is a friendly way in. From 24 October 2026, select Play! Pokémon stores sell the Delta Reign Build & Battle Box: four Delta Reign booster packs, a 40-card ready-to-play deck and one of four foil promos. Prerelease games use 40-card decks and four Prize cards, so they're quicker than a full game.

Which should you buy?
Our take
Brand new? Get a Battle Deck, or two. It's a complete deck, it's Play Level 2, and buying both means you have an opponent. Nothing else here does that.
The Deck Crafter's Collection is the best second buy. Forty staples like Ultra Ball, Rare Candy and Boss's Orders are exactly what a kitchen-table deck is missing, and one box upgrades a Battle Deck a lot. Just don't buy it as your first product.
League Battle Decks are for when you want to play at a League. The Mega Greninja ex list is a real deck with proper Trainer counts. If you can't wait until November, the Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex deck is here now.
