01 · The basics

What is a Magic prerelease?

A prerelease is the first chance to play a new set, held at local game stores before the official launch. Everyone opens the same kind of kit, builds a deck from what they open, and plays a few rounds. It's casual: Wizards recommends stores run Star Trek prereleases at a casual rules level, and plenty of players are new.

4 to 5 hrstypical event length, per Wizards
40card minimum deck
0cards you need to bring

You don't need a collection. Wizards' own prerelease FAQ says everything you need is in the Prerelease Pack or supplied by the store, including basic lands. Stores can run their event as a Swiss tournament with rounds, or as a looser "player list" event where you find your own opponents, so check which one you're booking.

First time?Brand new to Magic? Read our how to play Magic: The Gathering guide first, and tell the store when you book. Prereleases are full of returning and new players, and people expect to help.

What's in the Star Trek Prerelease Pack?

MTG Star Trek Prerelease Pack box with a shuttlecraft and the Star Trek logo
Prerelease PackThe box you get when you register
MTG Star Trek Play Booster pack, 14 cards
Play Booster (x6)14 Magic cards in each

Wizards lists the contents of every Star Trek Prerelease Pack as:

  • 6 Star Trek Play Boosters, 14 cards each
  • 1 traditional foil rare or mythic rare card
  • 1 deck box
  • 1 spindown life counter

That's 85 cards to build from. Each Play Booster follows the same recipe:

Slot Cards
Commons 7 (in 1 of every 25 packs, a stardates card replaces one)
Uncommons 3
Wildcard 1, of any rarity
Traditional foil 1, of any rarity
Rare or mythic rare 1
Land 1
Double-sided token 1, non-foil

Stardates cards (Star Trek-art reprints of older Magic cards) are legal in your Prerelease deck when you open them from these Play Boosters. The signed Headliner cards are Collector Booster only, so you won't find one in a Prerelease Pack.

03 · Booking

How to book a Star Trek prerelease in the UK

1Find a WPN store near youUse Wizards' official Store & Event Locator and search your postcode. Only WPN stores can run official prereleases.
2Check the dates and formatStores choose their own slots anywhere from 12pm on Friday 6 November to Thursday 12 November. Ask whether it's Sealed (the standard) or a Draft event; some stores run Draft prereleases too.
3Book and payEntry prices are set by each store, and popular weekend slots fill up. Ask how they take bookings.
4Arrive earlyOpening six packs, sorting and building a deck takes a while before round one. Sleeves are worth bringing if you want to protect a good pull.

WPN stores are also allowed to sell the full Star Trek range during prerelease week, a week before the 13 November release. If you want a box or a Commander deck early, that's the place to ask.

04 · Deck building

How to build a Star Trek Sealed deck

Sealed rules are simple: at least 40 cards, made from what you opened plus as many basic lands as you like. Anything you don't play is your sideboard. Here's the method Wizards teaches in its own prerelease guides, which is the one we'd use too.

1Sort by colourMake a pile for each of the five colours, plus multicolour cards, colourless artifacts and lands.
2Find your threatsYour best rares and mythics, and any creature that can win the game on its own. One or two strong threats in a colour is a good reason to play it.
3Find your removalCount the cards in each colour that deal with an opposing creature. This often decides your second colour.
4Pick two coloursWizards' advice is two colours. Three is possible, but your mana gets shaky.
5Fill out the curveAbout 23 spells, weighted towards two and three mana.
6Add 17 landsSplit roughly by how many cards of each colour you're playing.
Mana value Cards in Wizards' template
1 1 to 2
2 7 to 8
3 5 to 6
4 3 to 4
5 2 to 3
6+ 0 to 1
Lands 17
The curveThis is Wizards' standard Sealed template, from its recent prerelease guides. Lean lower if your deck is aggressive and higher if you're playing big fliers and removal.
!Common mistakeDon't build around your rare if it's in a colour with nothing else to support it. A deck with good removal and a sensible curve beats a pile of shiny cards nearly every time.

Star Trek cards to look out for in Sealed

Wizards hadn't published its full card gallery or a Star Trek prerelease guide when we wrote this (9 October), so these come from the cards it had revealed by then. Check Wizards' Star Trek card image gallery for the complete list before your event.

  • He's Dead, Jim (black, 4 mana): destroy target creature, then surveil 1. Unconditional removal at common.
  • Plasma Cascade (red, 3 mana): 3 damage to any target, and you can discard a card to draw one.
  • Command Decision (white, 2 mana): destroy a creature with power 4 or more, or just draw a card.
  • Set Phasers to . . . (white, 1 mana) and Consider the Prime Directive (blue, 3 mana): instants that can stun a creature, so it skips its next untap. Set Phasers can deal 3 to an attacker instead; Prime Directive can counter a spell unless its controller pays 3.
  • Resistance Is Futile (black, 2 mana): destroy a nonartifact creature, or bring back a cheap artifact creature. Watch out: it can't touch Borg and other artifact creatures.

Crystalline Entity costs 8, but casting it destroys every nonartifact creature and leaves you a 7/7 flier, which is about as good as Sealed bombs get. The Enterprise-D is colourless, so it fits any deck: tap your crew to station it up to 7 charge counters and it becomes a 4/5 flier with vigilance. Each turn you charge it, you also get to play the top card of your library.

  • Total power 8: Tactical Officer and several other white and red cards get better when you attack while your creatures have total power 8 or greater. Go wide and keep attacking.
  • Landfall: Planetary Patrol and a handful of green cards trigger when a land enters.
  • Basic landcycling: several big commons, like Free Borg Revolutionaries, can be cycled for {2} to fetch a basic land. That's a free fix for a two-colour deck, so don't undervalue them.
  • Federation and dilemmas: Hoshi Sato rewards a mix of creature types; Seven of Nine draws a card every time you pick a mode on a modal spell.

06 · Mechanics

Star Trek mechanics to know before you sit down

AssimilateTake a creature with a +1/+1 counter; it becomes a Borg artifact creature
Face a dilemmaHappens whenever you choose a mode on a spell or ability
FederationCounts the creature types among your non-Borg creatures
StationTap a creature to add charge counters to a Spacecraft

All four are confirmed by Wizards. Station is back from Edge of Eternities, so if you played that set, Spacecraft will feel familiar. Stun counters also show up a lot: a stunned permanent skips its next untap.
